September 6, 2022, we were able to gather once again at the annual T’ELL with the Bell brunch. Many joined us to listen to Dr. Ken Hook who spoke about the importance of Advance Care Planning when it comes to making informed consent decisions in the case of medical emergencies or for family and friends deemed mentally incapable.
Dr Hook explained your Substitute Decision-Maker (SDM) needs to be aware of your values, beliefs, and wishes, to better understand how you would make decisions with respect to your health care. He also clearly went over the legislation with respect to the SDM Hierarchy, stressing the importance of choosing your SDM sooner than later.
Dr. Hook shared several resources that might be helpful, including power of attorney forms and a website on advance care planning.
